The course will analyse the phenomenon of digital communities. It will discuss issues such as anonymity, seniority mechanisms, and other group characteristics that emerge online. The module will also present an overview of the topics and issues around which digital communities form and analyse the ways in which they emerge, grow, and deal with issues such as hate speech, trolling and harassment.

The course will analyse the communication strategies, messages and tools used by successful public institutions, NGOs, and political campaigns. It will consist of analytical classes and case studies complemented by practical workshops in which participants can test and discuss different online communications strategies and figure out which ones would work best within their own organisations. Hence, groups for this course will consist of no more than 10 participants.

This course would consist of two sub-components: in the first one, participants learn in detail about how to find information online and in open sources, such as public databases. This course will look at conflict-sensitive and value-based reporting. It will cover issues related to disinformation in the media and investigative journalism in an age of open data. It will also discuss media funding and sustainability for institutions funded by grants and those financed by direct reader or advertising income. This course aims to equip participants with practical skills in fundraising for and managing development projects. It will discuss ways of approaching donors such as EU institutions, individual states, and other actors operating in the development assistance sphere, and how best to present and manage development projects. It will guide participants through key stages of the project process, including applying for EU funding, organising the team, preparing documentation, and implementing proven methodologies for project monitoring and evaluation.

This course encompasses an array of issues related to the EU's Neighbourhood. It will cover cross-border cooperation tools within the EU and between the EU and ENP countries. It  will similarly look at the EU's migration policy, explaining the legal basis for the EU Member States' and Agencies' migration and border management strategies. The course will cover the role of fundamental rights protection in Europe and beyond, including the geopolitical context and cultural differences. It  will be complemented by a study visit to FRONTEX.

The course will provide participants with extended understanding of the Paris Agreement framework and its operationalization by the Katowice Rulebook. Further it will discuss cooperation between the European Commission and the EU Member States in implementation of the Energy Union in line with the Paris Agreement. Next, the course will acquaint participants with understanding of implementation of the Energy Union objectives by non-EU countries. During the course specific cases will be discussed to demonstrate the mechanisms to reach the consensus based decisions involving civil society, regional cooperation

Negotiating skills

Negotiating a global climate agreement (simulation)

The course will be centered on the simulation exercise modeling the dynamics of international climate change negotiations. It will first familiarize participants with basic concepts of the global climate change debate after which participants will enact negotiators striving to create an agreement to limit climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The proposals by the teams will be tested using climate policy simulation model to provide science-based feedback on negotiations proposals impact on atmospheric CO2 concentrations, global mean surface temperature, sea level rise etc.
